When were you first attracted to Buddhism?

About two years ago, my girlfriend (now wife) suggested that we research a common spirituality.  She forwarded me a flyer for a Buddhist talk at the Changing Hands Bookstore and I developed interest and attended the talk on a Friday night.  At the talk, Gen Lingpur’s words brought me a sense of calmness and I felt a deep connection with the philosophy.  I purchased Understanding the Mind, and I was so impressed by the keen descriptions of the factors and function of our mind that I knew the author had an unmatched insight into the true nature of our existence.  Geshe-la quickly became the source of my spiritual inspirations and I’ve found deep meaning for my life following his instructions, as derived from this pure Mahayana Buddhist lineage.

What made you choose to come to this Buddhist Center?

Clear light is the only Buddhist center I’ve experienced.  Because my path was drawn unwavering into this tradition and I’ve benefited so greatly from the my spiritual guide’s instructions, I have no desire to research any other Buddhist lineage.

Were you apprehensive about coming? What did you expect?

Meeting new people can be apprehensive, especially when exploring belief systems, but the Clear Light Sangha (followers of the tradition) were extremely welcoming and hospitable.

What were your first impressions when you arrived?

My ignorance had told me that true Buddhist practitioners resided in isolation and legitimate teachings could only be found in the remote regions of the far east.  To my amazement, not only does Buddhism exist in the west, Geshe-la’s teachings are intended for people, like most of us, who are engaged in society with ‘regular’ jobs and lifestyles.

What do you like best about coming here?

I feel I have a spiritual path that will enable me to truly help others.

How would you explain the benefits of meditation to someone new?

Buddhist meditations provide the methods for us to discover for ourselves the true meaning of happiness.

How has what you have learned here made a difference in your everyday work and home life?

While this question may be best answered by my family and co-workers, I see substantial improvements in the way I react to ‘problems’ at home and in the workplace.

What do you feel that Buddhism can offer to the world today?

If everybody practices Buddhism sincerely, all conflicts would come to a grinding halt and world peace would be easily attainable.

What is your favorite Kadampa Buddhist quotation?

There are so many excellent Buddhist quotations.  I find the following instruction from Geshe Potowa particularly applicable to our everyday experience:

“Hold to the principal of the two witnesses.”

The two witnesses, or indicators of our spiritual progress, are external signs and internal signs.  This quote tells us that we should not rely upon external appearance as the indicator of spiritual growth but that the internal indicators reflect our true progress.  We should observe how we treat people differently based on their social status, wealth, attractiveness and other external factors and question if our behavior is appropriate.  The example can be exemplified by vagrants we see everyday on the street.  We may not respect their choices, but this gives us an opportunity to test of our own patience and wisdom.  We must keep in mind that we really don’t know the thoughts of the vagrant; perhaps their very reason of existence is to inspire our spiritual growth.  If we look at the positive potential, these people offer us an opportunity to develop minds of compassion and giving that are essential for our spiritual growth.  Without such examples, could we generate compassion?  Similarly, we can think of all beings existing in this way.  By modifying our perceptions, we can avoid judging books by their cover and look for the goodness that resides within us all.

With which historical Kadampa Buddhist practitioner do you most identify, and why?

I identify strongly with Nagarjuna because of the obstacles he overcame.  When Nagarjuna was born, it was predicted that he would live only a few months.  Because of efforts made by his parents to expose him to spiritual blessings, his life was extended many times until Nagarjuna was old enough to practice spiritually as a young boy.  Through his efforts, his karma continued to purify, extending his life.  He used this opportunity to provide powerfully prolific instructions on the true nature of existence.  Nagarjuna lived a long, spiritually prosperous life despite the initial conditions of his birth.

What aspect of the Bodhisattva’s way of life most inspires you?

The Bodhisattva’s ability to love everyone above himself, and put this intent into practices, are the most impressive and inspiring aspects of their practice.

What’s the first thing you’re going to do when you become a Buddha?

Because I have a particular affinity for the practice of taking and giving, upon enlightenment, I will take the future sufferings of the beings of the three realms into my heart and emanate love to pacify their spiritual obstructions so that they may quickly find a suitable rebirth where they can practice the spiritual path to great enlightenment.
