The greatest obstacles to the fulfillment of our wish to experience pure happiness are death and ignorance, as death destroys our opportunity to take the essence of our precious human life, and ignorance hinders the development of a pure experience of Dharma. To overcome these obstacles and increase our lifespan and wisdom, we turn to the yoga of Buddha Amitayus. Amitayus embodies the qualities of long life, merit, and wisdom, which are essential for the happiness of enlightenment. Engaging in retreat and meditations focused on Amitayus at the beginning of the year is considered highly auspicious, setting the tone for the entire year ahead.
